Turns out the universe may be bursting with life.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

I hope it is. While this is all based on conjecture and educated guesses, they are guesses. I hope I’m alive to see the day with interact in a meaningful way with beings from another planet.

Sure, everyone loves science, until it’s 3 AM and you’re punching a whiteboard because the data doesn’t make sense.

Just add an undetermined constant. Voila!

“Could be” and “minimum” don’t belong in the same sentence.

“ I hope I’m alive to see the day with interact in a meaningful way with beings from another planet.”

We can’t even interact  meaningfully with beings on our own planet.

Yeah, lots of hand waving in the calc.

I like to imagine that if we ever figure out how to communicate with those civilizations, they’ll welcome us with open arms, saying, “Well done, Earth! Glad you finally figured it out! Welcome to the club.” And then they’ll learn about our internet and think we’re a bunch of weirdos :)

Have you seen this?

The lost of hypothetical explanations is a good read

I seen a few explanations about probability of intelligent life and the corresponding number of possible life forms.

The problem is that they all use un- testable coefficients to arrive at an answer. There also is the possibility that they are behind us or were so far advance but couldn’t get around life of light travel issues and didn’t out millions of year before us.

You can really let your imagination go wild. For example, it’s not unreasonable to conclude we could eliminate ourselves through a nuclear war. We have 2 craft that have left our solar system and as of today, will be the only trace that we ever existed once the sun dies or we kill each other off. An advance civilization on the opposite side of the Milky Way from us would conceivably never know we existed, despite them and us both looking for each other.

That’s exactly it! There’s one in that page about that: “It is the nature of intelligent life to destroy itself”. Maybe there have been heaps of civilisations just like ours, but within just a hundreds years or so of developing radio communication and spaceships, they also developed the ability to destroy themselves and did so.

Another one is the zoo or laboratory hypothesis, whereby life is out there in some form, but is choosing not to contact us. Either for our benefit or for theirs.

It is a little sad to think about the huge amount of evidence that suggests there is  no other life out there. I like to think it likely that there’s life of some form, it’s just possibly not as developed and definitely very far away.

The whole thing is really an exerc ise in what seems logical or intuitive by in reality may not be. For example, we have the technology to destroy ourselves but haven’t.

I think it is really just a distance issue. Light years are no joke and currently our physics doesn’t allow for moving faster than the speed of light. Sure bending of space time exists but not to the extent that we can bend the universe in half to cut the distance.

I think they are out there asking the same questions but unable to defeat the laws of physics, just like us.

There are some nebulous ones in there like “maybe we’re listening wrong”, because of course we can’t even begin to imagine what technology other being might have. Or “maybe they’re already among us and we don’t know it”, which is a bit conspiracy theory, but anything is possible.

I think you’ re right, distance has gotta be a huge part of it. Space is pretty empty, even if it’s not completely empty.
